LIZARD ISLAND:

Lizard Island is Australia's northernmost island resort. It is located 150 miles north of Cairns and 57 miles north east off the coast from Cooktown. Lizard Island is an absolute tropical paradise, a haven of isolation, gratification and relaxation.

In 1770 Captain James Cook first ventured into these uncharted reaches as the last chance for a crew seeking freedom from the beautiful but deadly coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. Cook anchored in one of the island's bays and climbed to the top of the hill now known as Cook's Look. There he surveyed a suitable passage away from the island.

On Lizard Island, goannas can be found almost everywhere, and were so common when James Cook first landed that it didn't take him long to name the island after them.

Today, Lizard Island offers the best of the Great Barrier Reef, both the inner and outer Reef experiences. Here you can snorkel off a secluded beach, there are 24 powdery white beaches just waiting to be explored, and swim in the famous Blue Lagoon.

Lizard Island is renowned for its diving. At the world famous 'Cod Hole', one of the many unforgettable dive sites that are close by and a favourite spot that fascinates divers, you'll get to experience the countless and dazzling array of tropical fish, and come face to face with a massive yet curious Potato Cod swimming right up to inspect you with child-like curiosity.

Venture a little further a field, set your sights on the sheer magnificence of Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

GREAT KEPPEL:

Located slightly north of the Tropic of Capricorn and ringed by 28 kilometres of beaches and bays, Great Keppel Island enjoys an ideal sub-tropical climate. Being far enough north to capture the sun, it enjoys mild winters while being far enough south to avoid the tropical monsoons.

The island is almost 1500 hectares and is a sanctuary to extensive native flora and fauna including more than 100 species of bird life including kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets and a diverse range of seabirds.

Captain Cook was the first recorded European to sight the island, anchoring off the mainland in May, 1770 and naming the group of 14 islands, of which Great Keppel is the largest, after Rear Admiral Keppel of the Royal Navy.

Great Keppel Island, is just a thirty-minute ferry ride from the mainland and regular ferry services depart from Keppel Bay Marina, providing easy access for day trips or overnight visits.

The island boasts seventeen white sand beaches - inviting swimming, snorkeling and diving. Bushwalk the island's interior where native flora, fauna and a rich Aboriginal heritage are waiting for you to discover. Go kayaking, coral viewing and enjoy the variety of water sports that are available.

Of the 74 islands, only 7 have resort facilities. Beyond the resorts the whole area is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the uninhabited islands are all controlled by National Parks and Wildlife. It is possible to visit the uninhabited islands by charter boat, private boat or water taxi. However it is necessary to obtain camping permits from the National Parks Office if you intend to stay the night.

Daydream Island is a small island only 15 minutes by water taxi from the mainland. The island's only resort, Daydream Island Resort, is a suitable destination for the general leisure market of all ages.

Recognised as one of the most luxurious resort destinations on the Great Barrier Reef, Hayman Island is a very good example of how the Great Barrier Reef can match any tropical paradise in the world.

Lindeman Island, the first of the islands in the Whitsunday group to be developed, is covered by more than 690 hectares of World Heritage Listed National Parkland, so you'll never run out of things to see and do.

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays, a colourful, cosmopolitan and inviting holiday town lying on the shores of a palm fringed beach and overlooking the calm waters of Pioneer Bay dotted with boats of all kinds. Airlie is part of a picturesque peninsula that reaches out to the Whitsunday Passage and provides the ideal mainland base for holiday fun and adventure in the Whitsundays.
